Web 2.0 Overview

 

Emerging interactive media are shaping users' motivations, attributes and social patterns into types of learning styles quite different than those based on sensory, personality or intelligence factors.

"Neomillennial" learners seek educational situations that interweave face-to-face interactions with shared virtual experiences across distance and time (distributed learning).

bulletThere is a new face to networked interactions! The advent of many technologies has opened up new possibilities.

Some of those technologies that enable this "connecting" include:

  • Web 2.0 : a perceived ?second-generation? of Web based communities and hosted services that facilitate collaboration and sharing between users.

  • convergent technologies: instant/text messaging, blogs, wikis, collaborative real-time editors, guestbooks, profiles, directories, e-mail, webcams, rss feeds, etc.

     

  • portable technologies : Cell phones, MP3/iPod, picture/video phones, PDA?s, etc.

     

  • Peer to Peer - direct sharing of content files via the 'Net containing audio, video, data or anything in digital format, and realtime data. [i.e. Skype]

Educators need to:
  • become familiar with Web. 2.0 Tools, and the ways in which users interact with those tools.

     

  • consider the best use of Web. 2.0 Tools within the context of their curriculum.

     

  • understand the issues and limitations inherent in the use of Web. 2.0 Tools.

     

  • familiarize themselves with the broader responsibilities of digital citizenship and the impact on their students as 21st century learners.
